Slot Beginning"Slot machines are machines that display about three
reels when a lever is pulled or a button is pushed. The reels spin around at
random allowing the player to hope or wish for a match which constitutes a win.
Slot machines are usually found in casinos or other gambling facilities. With
the use of home computers you are now able to play slots online from the comfort
of your home. When slots machines were first introduced they had a lever on one
side of the machine. This lever or arm helped give the machines the infamous
name of the one armed bandit because users would sit or stand in front of the
machines until their money was gone.
Charles Fey, the inventor of the
machine, introduced the slots in 1887. Fey's machine had three reels. The reels
had pictures of diamonds, spades, hearts, horseshoes, and a liberty bell. The
name of the machine was Liberty Bell. It was very popular. If the player hit
three bells in a row they won the highest payout of ten nickels. The Liberty
Bell slot machines can be seen in Reno, Nevada at the Liberty Belle Saloon and
Restaurant. Similar slot machines can be found online and in other casinos as
replicas of the original Fey Machine.
In 1891 Sittman and Pitt came up
with a machine that is based on the game of poker. They developed this gambling
machine using the 50 face cards. This machine was also popular in bars, where
some prizes were a free glass of beer or cigars. These machines were easily
manipulated allowing the owners to rig the wins for the house as opposed to the
gambler. Gambling was illegal in many states the winning prize of food allowed
the establishments to offer food, drinks, or smokes instead of money. |
